Vince Major is a cycling enthusiast who has a wealth of experience and knowledge spanning over 25 years. He runs Mountain Bike Epics UK with his partner Kathryn Weaver. They provide detailed guides for the best routes all over the country - based upon their own experiences. The company also offer supported tours and events for those who want to travel with their bike over greater distances.
Vince has been cycling since 1989. Much of his knowledge and experience is due to the advantage of living in Northamptonshire. Being in such a central location gives you easy access to other parts of the country.
I asked Vince about his love of cycling and his favourite routes, particularly around the county.
How did you get into cycling?
I've always like cycling but discovering new bike technology like suspension and disc brakes re-invigorated my love for biking.
What was it about cycling that caught your attention?
I'm a big fan of the countryside so what better way of exploring. I prefer mountain biking to walking as you cover a lot more ground.
What would you say is your favourite route in Northamptonshire and why?
My favourite route in Northants would be the single track trails in Harlestone Firs. These tracks are built by mountain bikers and are fun to ride. They also ride well in the winter when a lot of the county is un-rideable due to claggy mud!
Is Northamptonshire a good place for cycling?
Northants is OK for cycling. There are some good trails if you know where to find them and I believe road riding is good due to the rural nature of the county. Good off road areas include Pitsford Resevoir, Fineshade and Wakerley Woods, and Salcey Forest.
What advice would you give to those that want to get into cycling?
My advice would be to get the best bike and equipment that you can afford and get out exploring.
Are there any groups that people can join so they don't have to cycle alone?
A lot of bike shops in the county do regular 'shop rides' and are free. They can be a good source to find out about local clubs and groups.
What would you say you enjoy most about cycling?
I enjoy lots of thinks like being out with friends and the keep fit aspect, but the best thing is exploring and discovering new trails and places.
